This plant is based on the process of biofiltration in an aerobic environment, and has been used for many years for the treatment of discharge water, both civil and industrial.
By using a number of smal tanks the treatment ensures a high yield of organic substance for each unit of volume meaning a reduction in surface area is necessary for the installation. Although it is possible to increase the capacity of the treatment by simply adding more tanks to the existing ones.
Essentially, the biofilter is made up of a vessel containing body filling on which an aerobic biomass can develop.
How does it work?
The discharged water that is to undergo treatment passes though the biomass which, in turn, uses the substances in the water for its metabolism. The water travels in a downwards direction through the tank and using the special oxigenation method, the water can be recycled innumerable times through the biomass before being discharged. This means that there is very close contact between the water to be treated and the biomass, thereby avoiding an hydraulic short circuit.
Air for oxygenation is blown in from the base of the reactor tank, this encourages the recycling of the liquid from top to bottom. The special type of reactor (with the biomass attached to a body filling) means that decantation is not necessary
